Deporting Love: A Married Couple’s Journey to Stay in the United States

On November 28, 2005, Enrique Gonzalez walked across the border to pursue a safe and prosperous life in the U.S. Afraid of gang recruitment in El Salvador and seeking to escape to a safe place with opportunities to work to help himself and his family, after two days of processing and detention, he was taken (by immigration officials) to a Texas bus station where he was left to find his way in what would become his new home, the United States of America. Thirteen years later, with a U.S. Immigration approved marriage to a citizen, Enrique is being deported.

In the January 2017 Executive Order, Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States, the Trump administration laid out a much wider dragnet authorizing and empowering ICE in the deportation of undocumented.  Unlike the discretion of the Obama Administration, as evidenced in the 2011 Memo, which exercised a great deal of flexibility the Trump Administration's laser-sharp focus is on the numbers! Every undocumented …

The Music That Tells Our Story

The Music That Tells Our Story

Song of the Day

There's no better way to inspire and to escape when troubles find a way to get into our psyche. Through music, we process our emotional connection to the issues we face as the combination of lyrics and melodic vibe of the works of musical magic can either transport us on our path of processing challenges, drumming up memories or finding peace in an escape. Music binds us together with a common thread that makes us feel. We laugh, we love, we cry, we are simply touched by the melodic storytelling that sends visuals through our mind's eye as we work to understand our world.

Family separations, incarcerations, and deportations that decimate communities while tearing husbands from wives, children from parents, employees from employers, community leaders from neighborhoods, teachers, and students from schools, and more, delivers emotional devastation. There's so much to consider no matter which side of the loss you are on from being left behind as a family member or friend to be the one whose leaving with hearts filled with devastation and fear of the unknown of where you're heading. Music tells the story. For those who rise up to fight the grave injustice, the lyrics may empower the rise, rally support, share the feeling, and convey the story of the tragic events we face.

Enrique and I are insatiable music lovers. This page is dedicated to sharing music that tells our tragic journey. Through these songs, our story - the motions, the fear, the pain, the strength-in-the-fight, and weakness-in-the-loss, becomes real.

I Don't Want to Be Sad Forever

- August 28, 2019 -
Sad Forever - Lauv

Escaped the immigration concerns today and worked on cleaning up Pleasant Run Parkway. It's a waterway that runs through the heart of our community. My favorite escape is music and outdoors in the sun! Today was no different as I enjoyed giving back to my community by picking up trash and documenting photos and video along the parkway that will soon have a major renewal thanks to a grant we received.

Turning to a more positive song, the uptempo of this fun jingle by Lauv is certainly one to inspire a bolt of energy. No doubt, times are hard but, its important to celebrate what we do still have even if all we got is each other. In that case, I won the lottery. Enjoy the pick me up. I am! And get out a cleanup your community! You'd be surprised how much better you'll feel.

As the lyrics say, "Lately, I've been in the back seat of my own life. Try to take control but I don't know how to." And then the fun jingle chimes in. See for yourself...

Lyrics

Daydream
Life feels like a daydream
And I just wish that I could wake up
I just wish that I could wake up
My mind
Whispers in the nighttime
Voices always keeping me up
Telling me that I should give up
'Cause lately, I've been in the backseat to my own life
Trying to take control, but I don't know how to
I don't wanna be sad forever
I don't wanna be sad no more
I don't wanna wake up and wonder
What the hell am I doing this for?
I don't wanna be medicated
I don't wanna go through that war
I don't wanna be sad, I don't wanna be sad
I don't wanna be sad anymore
I don't wanna be sad forever
I don't wanna go one more day
I just wanna wake up and realize
Everything's gonna be okay
I don't know how else to say it
I don't wanna go through that war
I don't

As we try to return to our lives, settling into a new normal (whatever that is) following the crash of the recent denial of our petition to terminate the deportation order handed down by the Chicago Immigration courts, we now must face friends, family, clients, and partners and try to explain. The reaction is always the same. They, look at us expressing such sincere grief, almost as if there's been a death in the family. In truth, there has been! Our freedom is taking its last breath.

Having been bullied my entire life for being gay, then to be subjected to such disdain when we sought to marry, and now to have our right to stay in this country - (despite an immigration approved marriage) once again pushed further and further away, I just can't help but be thinking, "its just a sign of the times!"

It's really dark in this world these days as the hearts and minds of so many people are corrupted by a maleficent force the likes we haven't seen in this world for a very long time. No joke intended, what is happening to our family and millions of others across the nation, is simply barbaric. I've never seen such hate in my 50 years on this earth.

As the lyrics say, "We got to get away from here," Enrique and I feel it has come to that. After a life of being marginalized under the domination and control of conservative values that would just as soon deport any human being that does not follow their belief system, or may not look how they approve, or whom may love in a different way, no less, no more, than others, what would any logical thinking person do?

We'll continue to share our plans and info as the story unfolds. We appreciate all the incredible love and support we've received so far. We know you are with us and we appreciate that more than you know. That said, nothing can overshadow the severity of the situation and the unsettling fact that we must now shift our attention to fight for the freedom of so many others, if not for ourselves. I don't know, for some reason this song... it just really struck my heart! There is no sugar-coating what is going on! It is simply inhumane!

We love and appreciate everyone's support! No words!

Lyrics

Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
Welcome to the final show
Hope you're wearing your best clothes
You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky
You look pretty good down here
But you ain't really good
If we never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
We gotta get away from here
We gotta get away from here
Just stop your crying
It'll be alright
They told me that the end is near
We gotta get away from here
Just stop your crying
Have the time of your life
Breaking through the atmosphere
And things are pretty good from here
Remember everything will be alright
We can meet again somewhere
Somewhere far away from here
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
Just stop your crying
It's a sign of the times
We gotta get away from here
We gotta get away from here
Stop your crying
Baby, it will be alright
They told me that the end is near
We gotta get away from here
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
We never learn, we been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets?
The bullets
We don't talk enough
We should open up
Before it's all too much
Will we ever learn?
We've been here before
It's just what we know
Stop your crying, baby
It's a sign of the times
We gotta get away
We got to get away
We got to get away
We got to get away
We got to get away
We got to, we got to (away)
We got to, we got to (away)
We got to, we got to (away)

August 27, 2019 - Last Sunset, Last Goodbye by BLOW

In reflection of all the people, places, and things we may be forced to leave behind, this catchy pumping beat and lyrics by BLOW has garnered the 8/27/2019 Song of the Day.

And if I leave, the waterfalls
I'm missing you, I feel so small
I'm losing anything you've given me
You know I'm not an enemy

It's all right
It's all right
This is not the last goodbye
It's all right
It's all right
This is not the last goodbye
This is not the last goodbye

And if I leave, I hear you call
I'm feeling you, I breathe your soul
I lay down theses feelings, push them out of sight
I just wanna creep out into the light

It's all right
It's all right
This is not the last goodbye
It's all right
It's all right
